What I want every one of my patients to learn

To adequately navigate life, we have to know stuff. Here are things I try to teach all of my patients.

We can be at ease, or we are at some degree of dis-ease.

When we are not at ease, a dis-ease can set in-- Mental, emotional or physical. What could be more important than learning how to live a life of ease so we can then teach this to our children? Not that life isn't hard (It is!). Living at ease is handling difficulties without resistance and negativity.

Kids can't learn calmness until they can be still.

Sometimes our mind may say, "I need to learn to relax." But believe me, our mind doesn't have a clue. Interestingly, if we will be physically still (and quiet) our body will naturally take us into calmness, relaxation, and with continued practice, peacefulness.

Feelings aren't Good or Bad

If kids think some feelings are good and some feelings are bad, they will actively seek out and cling to the "good" ones while trying to avoid what they consider to be the "bad" feelings. It's much better to see feelings as "comfortable" or "uncomfortable. If we teach our kids this paradigm, they can be more honest with their feelings and they are much easier to manage.

Decisions can be feeling based or thought based

Feel-based decisions push us toward what's easy or entertaining. But thought-based decisions push us toward what's best for the situation at hand, keeping in mind our personal interests, but also taking into account the feelings of others.
